COUP DE MAIN: Hi Cher, where are you calling from today?
CHER LLOYD: I'm at home in London.

CDM: First of all, congratulations on your debut album, 'Sticks + Stones'. What inspired its name?
CHER: It's something that my Mum used to say to me growing up, it's a message to everyone about words that hurt you.

CDM: What was the recording process for the album like?
CHER: It was really good, it was my first time ever being in a proper recording studio, recording my own songs. It was really, really good, to be able to sit down and write as well.

CDM: Was it important to you to co-write some of the songs on the album?
CHER: Yeah, definitely! I'm still learning the ways to actually write a song, but it was really good to be able to make the songs mine.

CDM: Having co-wrote some of those songs, do you think that is a main point of difference between you and some of the other other pop-stars who come out of 'The X Factor'?
CHER: I just think it's something that I wanted to do personally, and I think it's definitely made my music be mine.

CDM: What are your main songwriting influences and inspirations?
CHER: Just something that I've been through and that I know other people are going through, just real life stuff.

CDM: How would you describe your music to people that haven't heard it before?
CHER: It's very different, and I did a lot of experimenting on which sounds I wanted to use, so it is very different, and it's very me.

CDM: What was your favourite part of the album to record?
CHER: 'Want U Back' was my favourite song to record. I was really, really happy and I had a really good time in the studio, I just remember really good memories of recording it.

CDM: American rapper Astro features on the new version of 'Want U Back', how did that all come about?
CHER: I met him at 'The X Factor' U.S.A. when I went over to see Simon Cowell and I just thought he was a really good performer and I asked him to be on the song and he said, yes!

CDM: What was it like working with him on that song?
CHER: I didn't actually sit down in the studio with him, I recorded my bit and then he recorded his. But he was really, really good, and he looks really good in the video.

CDM: Are there any other people that you'd like to collaborate with?
CHER: Probably Nicki Minaj! I just love the way that she works and is on-stage, I just love her music and her style.

CDM: Your album definitely reminds me of Nicki Minaj and Lily Allen.
CHER: I love Lily Allen!

CDM: Do you have a favourite song on the album?
CHER: Probably 'Over The Moon', because it explains my journey to get to where I wanted to be.

CDM: What do you want people to take away from listening to your music?
CHER: I just want my songs to be memorable, and for people to hear my songs in ten year's time and remember the great times they had while listening to 'em.

CDM: Do you have any favourite lyrics on the album?
CHER: I've got many different lyrics that I really like. There's one saying in ['Grow Up']: 'I'm a princess, I don't wanna be the queen." That basically means that I'm alright with who I am and I don't feel that I need to be better... do you know what I mean?

CDM: Do you have a favourite song to play live?
CHER: Probably 'Beautiful People', because I get to do it acoustically - it just sounds really, really pretty.

CDM: Do you prefer singing or rapping?
CHER: Singing, I am a singer, not a full-on rapper.

CDM: What do you think about when you're performing live?
CHER: My fans, definitely pleasing my fans and having a great time.

CDM: What's the most memorable thing that a fan has ever said to you?
CHER: Just that I've changed the way that they think and the way that they act, and that I've given them hope to achieve their dreams, which is great.

CDM: What personally gives you hope and inspires your dreams?
CHER: Just seeing other people do well. When you see the mega-stars doing really, really well, it gives you hope that you could probably do that too.

CDM: What are your five favourite things in the whole wide world?
CHER: My music, my family, my fans, my boyfriend, and food.

CDM: What was your favourite TV show to watch when you were younger?
CHER: I watched 'Blue Peter' a lot. That was quite cool - yeah because they made stuff and I thought it was quite cool.

CDM: What is your favourite movie of all time?
CHER: 'Hocus Pocus', my favourite ever!

CDM: If you could have magical powers, what would you want and why?
CHER: To fly. So then I could get away from things whenever I want.

CDM: Who are your top five girl-crushes of all time?
CHER: Nicki Minaj, Katy Perry, Jessie J, Beyoncé and Kat Von D.

CDM: Have you decided what your next tattoo will be yet?
CHER: No, I think I'm going to have a little break from getting tattoos until I really know what I want next, but I'm not sure at the moment.

CDM: Where do you get your fashion and style inspiration from?
CHER: I like to experiment a lot, I just like to make myself look different to everyone else. Shopping at all different places from vintage to high-street, and then I just put it together myself.

CDM: Do have a stylist?
CHER: I do for shows and stuff, but for other things I like to dress myself.

CDM: Do you consider yourself to be a role-model?
CHER: Only if people want me to be their role-model, it would be nice.

CDM: Do you believe it's important to stand up for what you believe in? I know you've spoken out against cyber-bullying...
CHER: Yeah definitely, I think if you want to make an impact, you've got to say what you feel and do what you feel.

CDM: Do you have advice for anyone that might be experiencing cyber-bullying or in a similar situation currently?
CHER: Speak out about it, don't get it all bottled up - just do something about it, get some advice off people, don't feel alone.

CDM: What's been the biggest highlight of your career so far?
CHER: Definitely getting a Number One in the UK, that was really, really cool.

CDM: Do you have any other things on your bucket-list that you'd really like to achieve?
CHER: Yeah, there's lots of things, like later down the line I'd probably like to get into acting - I've got lots of things that I could do, but at the moment it's just music, music, music.

CDM: What kind of acting roles would you like to pursue?
CHER: Probably comedy or something like that.

CDM: Are there any actresses you admire?
CHER: None that I can think of, there are lots and lots of different films that I love, and watching different characters and how different people play them.

CDM: What artists or music have you been listening to lately?
CHER: I've been listening to lots, and I've been listening to the radio a lot - there's some really cool stuff out in the charts at the moment. I'm really liking the electro feel, I'd like to do something like that.

CDM: Are there any particular electro artists that you've been listening to?
CHER: Sometimes I just like to listen to unknown people, that can be really, really cool. I like going on blogs and stuff.

CDM: What blog-sites do you regularly visit?
CHER: There's lots of R&B blogs that I like going on and it basically just names new music that isn't out and won't be out for a long time and stuff. It just gives you an insight on what's coming up next and finding out about new artists. I like to YouTube a lot too, and try and find unknown singers.

CDM: Are there any unknown singers that you're supporting right now?
CHER: It seems as though the ones that I keep bumping into are getting signed, so...<laughs>

CDM: What's been your favourite place to perform so far and why?
CHER: I went back on 'The X Factor' to perform, it was really, really cool... I've got my own music now, it's quite good to go back to the place I was first discovered and sing for them again.

CDM: Who would be your dream artist to tour with?
CHER: Probably someone like Katy Perry, I think she puts on a really, really good show. And her fans seem cool as well.

CDM: How do you want your sound to progress on your next album, have you started thinking about it yet?
CHER: Yeah, I'd probably like to go a bit more edgy, think of some more cool collaborations maybe and experiment a lot more. And get more comfortable with the sound that I've already got on the first album.

CDM: We haven't had a local version of 'The X Factor' in New Zealand yet, but if we did, do you have any advice for people wanting to compete?
CHER: I think that you should just be yourself and make sure you pick a really, really good song, and make sure you're memorable.

CDM: How important do you think it is to make choices on what you want to do, versus what the judges want you to do?
CHER: I think it's really important to do what you want to do because in the long-run it's your career, you want everything to go well and you want to be happy with what you're doing. It was really important for me to take control of my career.

CDM: So honesty is really important to you?
CHER: Yeah, definitely.

CDM: I guess the big thing that your New Zealand fans want to know is... when are you going to come and visit us?
CHER: Whenever I'm able to come over! I've got a tour coming up in the UK, and then I really want to get to lots of different places, so hopefully I'll get to come over to you.

CDM: What do you know about New Zealand?
CHER: Not that much, except that I had a teacher from New Zealand, she taught me art!

CDM: Lastly, do you have a message for your New Zealand fans?
CHER: Just keep supporting me, because it really, really helps, and hopefully I can get to see you all and thank you.
